Academic Intervention
Structured support to help students reach grade level.

Some students need more than the regular classroom gives them to reach grade-level standards in reading, writing, or math. Academic intervention is targeted instruction, in small groups or one-on-one, built around the specific skills a student is struggling with.
Knowledge Road matches certified teachers to that work, sets clear goals with the school, and documents progress so the school and the family can see whether it is working.
Documented the same way as our mandated services.
Our teachers deliver instruction under IEP and IESP mandates every week, where every session is recorded and every goal is measured. We document academic intervention the same way. Schools see what was taught, how the student responded, and whether the student is catching up, without having to follow up to get the paperwork.

Instruction aimed at the specific skills a student is missing
We start from the student's own data, the assessments and classwork that show where learning broke down, and build instruction around those skills instead of re-teaching the whole year.
- Targeted instruction in reading, writing, and math
- A certified teacher works on the specific skills a student is missing, found in assessments and classwork, instead of re-teaching the whole subject.
- Small-group or one-on-one sessions, in or out of the classroom
- The format is chosen to fit the student and the setting, and sessions are scheduled around the school day alongside regular classes.
- Goals set with the school from the student's own assessment data
- We review assessments, classwork, and teacher input, then agree on goals at the start, written so families can understand them and reviewers can measure them.
- Session-by-session documentation of progress
- Teachers record every session, so the school has a record of what was taught and how the student responded.
- Regular updates for families and school teams
- Progress is reviewed on a regular cycle and shared with both groups, so it is clear whether the support is working and when it can step down.
- Coordination with classroom teachers so skills carry over
- The intervention teacher stays in touch with the student's classroom teacher so the work in sessions lines up with regular classwork.
Who it’s for

- Public, charter & nonpublic schools

Pick any part of the sentence to see the detail.
We review the assessments, classwork, and teacher input that show where a student is struggling, so instruction starts with the skills the student is missing.
Goals are agreed with the school up front, written in terms a family can follow and a review can check.
A certified teacher is matched to the subject, the grade level, and the setting, and scheduled around the school day.
Every session is documented, progress is reviewed on a regular cycle, and the plan changes when the data says it should.
Common questions
What is academic intervention?
Targeted instruction for students who need structured support to reach grade-level standards in reading, writing, or math. It focuses on the specific skills a student is missing, in small groups or one-on-one, alongside their regular classes.
Is academic intervention the same as special education?
No. A student does not need an IEP or IESP to receive academic intervention; it supports any student who is falling behind grade-level standards. When a student does have a plan, intervention is coordinated with the services that plan already calls for, such as SETSS.
Who delivers the instruction?
Certified teachers matched to the subject and grade level, cleared to work with children before a first session, and supported by our coordination team throughout the engagement.
How is progress measured?
Against goals agreed with the school at the start. Teachers document every session, progress is reviewed on a regular cycle, and families and school teams receive updates, so it is clear whether the support is working and when it can step down.
How do we get started?
Tell us the grade levels, the subjects, and how many students need support. Our coordination team responds within 24 hours, typically within 4–6 hours.

If students are behind and no one is free to teach the groups
- We know which students are behind. We have no one free to teach the groups.
- For public and charter schools, New York State guidance says intervention must be led by an appropriately certified teacher, and a teaching assistant cannot be the primary provider. We match certified teachers to subject, grade and setting. A call with your grades, subjects and numbers is enough to start.
- I can't find a block for it without pulling kids out of core instruction.
- State guidance cautions against taking students out of regular instruction and lists other options: an extra period, support inside the classroom, and sessions before or after school. Our teachers work in small groups or one-on-one, in or out of the classroom, so tell us the blocks you have.
- How do I show families and my superintendent that it is working?
- Where intervention is required, the state expects written notice to parents when services begin and progress reports every quarter, so records matter from the first session. Our teachers document each session against goals agreed with you up front, and progress is reviewed on a regular cycle.
- Grade bands and a rough number of students
- Subjects: reading, writing, math or a mix
- The periods or blocks you can make available
- The assessment data you use to identify students
- Funding source or budget line, and a target start date
You can call without all of these. We will work out the rest with you.
