Holidays Around the World: Christmas
Children and families all over the world celebrate many holidays in the month of December, and although they may look different, they all have one thing in common: people coming together to celebrate important holidays and traditions with each other that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Here is a collection of holidays that are celebrated throughout the month of December, with a special focus on the characteristics of each holiday that makes it unique. Also, be sure to play the multiple choice game after!
The Christmas holiday was founded on December 25, and was first celebrated by masses of people in Rome in the year 336! The Christmas celebration was started to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and it is known that thousands of people and their livestock animals traveled to Bethlehem to celebrate the birth of Jesus, including the Three Wise Men, who brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the newborn baby Jesus. It is on Christmas day that we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and there are certain traditions that are followed, including a Christmas Eve dinner Feast of the Seven Fishes, where seven different kinds of seafood are offered, including crabs, mussels, shrimp and long-grain pastas, such as fusilli, linguine, or spaghetti, and other fish entrees are served in order.
A special mass at church is also offered for the people to attend, and many people gather with family and friends to celebrate the true meaning of this Christmas holiday at a special mass, which is offered throughout the day and at midnight.
People who celebrate Christmas with their families, friends, and loved ones also exchange presents with one another! These gifts serve as a way to celebrate the holiday, and are usually wrapped and placed underneath a Christmas tree, which is found inside the home and decorated with ornaments and other special decorations, including lights, figurines hanging from strings, and a Christmas topper on top of the tree, which is usually an angel or other large topper. Christmas carolers are also a festive part of the holiday, as these are groups of people who go from door to door, or sing in a church chorus, bringing cheer to others and singing Christmas songs and carols, such as “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “White Christmas,”
“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” or other festive holiday songs. People also make handmade Christmas cards, or buy them, and children receive gifts from Santa Clause on December 25 during this cherished holiday season.
Millions of people all over the world celebrate this annual holiday, including Catholics, Christians, and other followers of Jesus Christ. Christmas is a worldwide celebration that includes sharing Christmas dinner with families and friends, opening presents, singing carols, making cards, and attending Christmas mass to celebrate the nativity, or birth, of Jesus Christ around the world.
